Early Gender "Prediction"

This is so much fun! I love doing these gender predictions! All nonsense really I know, but so much fun and a nice way to spend a bit of time while I'm waiting for my scan in 4 weeks.

Heart Rate Gender Predicition

I had my 16 week midwife appointment today which is what has set me off looking at the different Old Wives Tales because I have a record of Baby's heart rate: 145bpm. According to the myth this suggests a GIRL! Maybe.... Anything less than 140bpm is likely to be a boy, anything more should be a girl with anything over 150bpm almost certainly a girl.

Sadly I don't have a record of my other babies heart rates at 16 weeks. It will be in the Green Notes I had for each of them, but I don't get to keep those.

"Nub" Theory

Baby Bean - Sex Unknown!
They say you can tell the baby's sex at the 12 week scan IF you can get a good clear shot of the "nub" (read more here).

The gist of it being that if you can see the nub and it is pointing up then it's likely to be a boy. If it's pointing down or lying flat it's a girl. (Take a look at Tom's scan below... with hindsight that was a cracking "boy" nub shot!)

Here's our 12 week scan - actually done at 10 weeks - and totally lacking in a nub either due to it being too early (nubs can be seen from about 11 weeks) or simply not clear enough. Grr!

"Skull" Theory

This is the idea that you can tell the sex of your baby at 12 weeks from the shape of their skull. Simply compare your scan picture with the diagram here (which you can find all over the internet by Googling "skull theory").

Again this only works if you get a scan pic of your baby in the right position. Bean isn't too bad here, but my 1st and 3rd kids had their backs to the sonographer at their dating scans so that wouldn't have helped much.

Jack's skull was very round from behind which is more male. Tom gave us a great profile though showing us a massive bulging forehead (sorry son) which would be that brow ridge "H". George's scan wasn't very clear at all.

I think Little Baby Bean has a prominent brow too, which would suggest BOY.

Here are all my dating scans for all 4 of my kids; my 3 boys and the unknown Bean!

So what am I making of all this?

Frankly I am no wiser! But did anyone really expect me to be? There's only one 100% certain way of knowing the sex on the baby and that's to look between it's legs once they are born! But for now I'll wait for my 20 week scan and hope for a nice clear shot. After all, with George there was very little doubt when the brazen little monkey rolled over and displayed his wares on the screen for the whole world to see!
